Overview
A 5-day immersive journey into the Tibetan grasslands of western Sichuan. Stay with nomadic families, visit the spectacular Larung Gar Buddhist academy, and experience a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries.
Itinerary
Long drive through Min River valley into Tibetan regions. Arrive in Maerkang (2,600m). Evening visit to Zhuokeji Ancient Village, an 800-year-old Tibetan fortress.
Drive across high grasslands to Sertar (3,800m). Afternoon at Larung Gar, world's largest Tibetan Buddhist academy with 40,000+ monks in tiny red houses cascading down a valley. Sunset photography.
Full day with a Tibetan nomad family. Help herd yaks, learn to make yak-butter tea and tsampa, ride a horse across the prairie. Sleep in a traditional black yak-hair tent.
Morning at the grasslands. Afternoon drive back to Maerkang. Farewell dinner.
Drive back to Chengdu through Min River valley. Afternoon arrival.
